program note

The Great Mosque in the city of Djenne in Mali is one of the architectural icons of Africa. Constructed of mud bricks, each year the town population gathers to make repairs to the building after the depredations of the wet season on the mud plaster exterior. This constant renewal suggested a kind of rondo structure with the section from bar #13 – 19 coming back a number of times with irregular time signatures filling the bars between repetitions – suggesting a breakdown of the solid structure.
